Troubleshooting Tips

Introduction to SPOT:

·        SPOT needs a clear view of the sky to obtain a GPS signal and provide the most accurate location information.

·        Orienting SPOT so that the SPOT logo is facing up toward the sky will improve performance as the antenna is located under the logo.

·        Keep SPOT at least 12 inches away from other GPS devices as SPOT can interfere with signal reception of other GPS devices.

·        If all visible lights blink RED in unison, then your unit has failed a Self-Test and should be submitted for repair/replacement.

·        If the On/Off, GPS, and Message Sending lights blink RED in unison, then your unit has a GPS failure and should be submitted for repair/replacement.

Tips to help send your first SPOT Check-OK message

Perform an initial system test to evaluate your entire messaging system, from the operational condition of the SPOT to the readiness of those you've chosen to receive messages.

  1. Go outside to where SPOT has a clear view of the sky in all directions.

  2. Press and hold the On/Off button until it begins to blink GREEN.

  3. Once it has blinked GREEN twice, self-test has finished and you can continue to step 4.

  4. Press and hold the Check Ok button until it begins to blink GREEN.

  5. Leave SPOT outdoors with the SPOT logo facing up to the sky. The GPS indicator light blinks GREEN as SPOT acquires a GPS fix, then the Message Sending indicator light will blink GREEN as SPOT transmits the Check-OK message over the 20 minute message cycle.

  6. View your messages in your account at www.findmespot.com.

NOTE: if the GPS light blinks RED, SPOT does not have a clear view of the GPS satellites and you must move to an area with a clearer view for proper operation.

Tips for receiving your email and SMS notifications

·        SPOT sends all North American email and SMS messages via email.  This means to send a cell phone a text message, we email 1234567890@yourcellprovider.com and then they relay that to your recipients.

·        Some email providers see noreply@findmespot.com and depending on their policies may put our messages into a Junk mail folder or simply discard them without notifying anyone.  If the messages are rejected, then Customer Care can determine this with you.

·        If your recipient does not have text messaging enabled for their cellular service, they will not be able to receive the message

·        If your recipient's cellular provider sees messages from noreply@findmespot.com as junk mail, they may discard it without delivering or reject the message.  This may also be the case for email providers.

·        If your cellular provider does not support email to SMS text messaging services, then you will not be able to send SMS messages to them from SPOT at this time.

Tips for using the Track Progress function

·        Tracking is an additional service that is not part of the basic subscription.  Make sure you have subscribed to Tracking before trying to send messages of this type. The Track message cycle consists of a Track message sent every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until cancelled.

  1. Go outside to where SPOT has a clear view of the sky in all directions.

  2. Press and hold the On/Off button until it begins to blink GREEN.

  3. Once it has blinked GREEN twice, self-test has finished and you can continue to step 4.

  4. Press and hold the Track button until it begins to blink GREEN.

  5. Once your GPS location is obtained, SPOT will send your waypoint.

  6. View your messages in your account at www.findmespot.com.
